Name

The Philomathean Gazette is Introduced, December 4, 1857

Date

12/04/1857

Description

Five years after its founding, the members of the Philomathean Society decided to create a publication where they could preserve the papers that members presented at the weekly meetings and publish other articles of interest. The first issue of this publication, known as the Philomathean Gazette, was published on December 4, 1857. The Gazette was published weekly, by hand, and included original essays, poetry, short stories, and social or campus issues. It was Phi Mu's first publication and it may have been the first ever by a women's fraternity. It was, at the very least, the second such publication, as the Adelphean Society launched a similar publication called the Adelphean Chronicle at about the same time.
